Laguna Kiani

Laguna Kiani is one of Puerto Rico’s natural bioluminescent lagoons, set among healthy mangroves on Vieques. It is a good stop for anyone curious about nature, kids and adults alike. The US Fish and Wildlife Service protects and maintains the area.

What to expect

A boardwalk runs through the mangroves to the lagoon, with open views across the water. It is a good spot for watching birds. Fish and Wildlife has put up an information display with photos and background on the local environment, so it is worth a few minutes before you walk out.

The mangroves

Four mangrove species grow around the lagoon:

  • Red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle)
  • Black mangrove (Avicennia germinans)
  • White mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa)
  • Button mangrove (Conocarpus erectus)

Hours and rules

The site closes at 6 pm. Swimming and fishing are not allowed.

Because it closes before dark, you cannot see the bioluminescence here. To see it at night, book a guided tour at Mosquito Bay.
