Frequently Asked Questions
The questions everyone asks before arriving—with a little local advice to help your trip go smoothly.
Planning Your Trip
Where is Vieques?
Vieques is a small island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. It’s part of Puerto Rico, but you’ll need a separate flight or ferry ride to get here.
Is there a bridge to Vieques?
No. Getting here requires a boat or plane—which is part of what keeps the island feeling like an island.
Can I visit Vieques as a day trip?
You can, but an overnight stay gives you much more breathing room. If you want beach time, dinner, and a bio bay tour, stay at least one night.
How many nights should I stay?
We recommend at least three nights. Four or five gives you time to explore different beaches, enjoy the bio bay, and have a few afternoons with absolutely nothing scheduled.
Is Vieques a good destination for families?
Absolutely. Beach days, horses, wildlife, and time outside make it a wonderful family destination. Bring the supplies your children need and plan transportation that accommodates everyone comfortably.
Is Vieques a good place for a destination wedding?
Yes, especially if you love private villas, beautiful scenery, and a celebration that feels like a vacation with your favorite people. Guests should receive clear travel instructions well ahead of time.
Should I book accommodations or transportation first?
Check both together. Make sure your travel connections work with your dates before committing to a stay, and reserve your rental vehicle early.
Do I need to plan every day in advance?
No—and we wouldn’t recommend it. Book the essentials, including transportation, accommodations, and any must-do tours, then leave room for weather, discoveries, and lazy beach days.
Getting to Vieques
How do I get to Vieques from San Juan?
You can fly to Vieques or travel by road to Ceiba and take the ferry. The best option depends on your arrival time, budget, luggage, and comfort with connections.
Does the ferry leave from San Juan?
No. The ferry departs from Ceiba, on Puerto Rico’s east coast. Getting from San Juan to Ceiba is a separate part of your trip.
Can I fly from San Juan’s main airport?
Yes, flights to Vieques are available from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, known as SJU. Check the airline’s schedule for your travel dates.
Is Isla Grande the same airport as SJU?
No. Isla Grande, airport code SIG, is a separate airport in San Juan. If your Vieques flight departs from there, you’ll need a ground transfer from SJU.
Can I fly from Ceiba instead of taking the ferry?
Flights from Ceiba can be another option. Check availability for your dates before planning your ground transportation around that departure.
Should I fly or take the ferry?
Flying can simplify the journey, while the ferry is generally the more economical crossing. Compare the entire trip, including ground transportation, luggage charges, parking, and connection time.
Can I book my Vieques connection on the same airline reservation?
Check whether your airline offers that option. If you book separate tickets, allow a generous connection window and understand each carrier’s policies for missed connections.
How much time should I leave between connections?
Work backward from your next carrier’s check-in deadline, allowing time for baggage collection, airport transfers, traffic, and delays. Avoid planning around everything going perfectly.
Can I get to Vieques if my flight lands late in San Juan?
Possibly, but check the onward schedule before booking. An overnight stay on the main island may be the most practical option.
Should I stay in San Juan before or after Vieques?
It can make the trip more relaxed, especially with a late arrival or early flight home. It also gives you time to enjoy San Juan rather than rushing through it.
Can weather affect my travel plans?
Yes. Flights and ferry service can be affected by weather and operating conditions. Keep your contact information current and check directly with your carrier for updates.
What if I miss my connection to Vieques?
Contact your airline or ferry operator immediately, then notify your accommodation, driver, and rental company. Ask about the next available departure before making replacement arrangements.
Ferry Travel
Should I buy ferry tickets in advance?
Yes, whenever possible—particularly for weekends, holidays, and dates when you need a specific departure. Check the official ticketing platform for current availability.
What if ferry tickets aren’t available online?
First, check whether your travel dates have been released. Online availability and ticket-window availability can differ, but don’t build a time-sensitive itinerary around getting walk-up tickets.
How early should I arrive at the ferry terminal?
Follow the arrival instructions on your ticket and leave additional time for parking, luggage, and finding the boarding area. Your departure time is not your arrival time.
Can I bring my main-island rental car on the ferry?
Plan on leaving it on the main island and renting separately on Vieques. Don’t purchase a vehicle ticket assuming your rental car will be allowed aboard.
Where do I leave my car in Ceiba?
Paid parking is available near the ferry terminal. Allow extra time to park and get yourself and your luggage to the terminal.
Can I bring luggage on the ferry?
Check the current baggage categories when booking and include any items that require their own ticket or fee. Keep your confirmation accessible in case you need to review or update the reservation.
Should I print my ferry ticket?
Follow the instructions in your confirmation. We recommend saving a screenshot of your boarding QR code so you can access it quickly without searching through emails.
What should I keep with me during the crossing?
Keep your identification, phone, wallet, medications, and anything you’ll need during the ride in a small, accessible bag.
Flying to Vieques
Are the planes to Vieques small?
Expect a small regional aircraft rather than a large commercial jet. If you’re nervous about small planes or have accessibility needs, speak with the airline before booking.
Are baggage rules different on island flights?
They can be. Check your operating airline’s current weight limits, dimensions, fees, and carry-on rules rather than assuming your main airline’s allowance applies.
Why might my luggage arrive on a later flight?
Small aircraft have strict weight and balance limits. If your airline advises that bags may travel separately, keep medications, valuables, and first-night essentials with you within the permitted allowance.
Where will I land on Vieques?
Commercial flights arrive at Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport, airport code VQS. Confirm your pickup arrangements before departing for the island.
Getting Around
Do I really need a rental vehicle?
We strongly recommend one if you want to explore. Having your own transportation makes beaches, groceries, dinners, and spontaneous stops much easier.
How far ahead should I book my rental?
As soon as your dates are firm. Don’t wait until arrival to find out whether a suitable vehicle is available.
What kind of vehicle should I rent?
Choose based on your group size, luggage, accommodation access, and where you plan to drive. Ask the rental company which roads and beach access routes its vehicles are permitted to use.
Is a golf cart a good substitute for a car?
It depends on your plans. Consider distance, rain, luggage, children, and nighttime driving, and ask about the cart’s permitted routes before reserving.
Can I walk everywhere?
Choose your accommodation carefully if you want to walk to restaurants and shops. Exploring the wider island and visiting different beaches requires a transportation plan.
Can I rely on taxis for my whole stay?
You can plan a trip around prearranged rides, but it takes more coordination. Book important pickups ahead and discuss your return ride before being dropped off.
Where can I find taxi drivers’ numbers?
Your accommodation probably has a preferred-driver list, and the ferry ticket window posts numbers too. Save several contacts—sometimes calls and texts go unanswered.
How do I get from the airport or ferry to my rental vehicle?
Ask your rental company for exact instructions. Confirm the meeting point, whether pickup is included, and what to do if your arrival changes.
Do I need to bring a child’s car seat?
Reserve an appropriate seat with your rental company or bring your own. Confirm availability and fit ahead of time rather than assuming a seat will be waiting.
What should I know about driving around horses?
Slow down, give them plenty of space, and be prepared to stop. Don’t feed them from your vehicle or assume they’ll move out of your way.
Arrival and Island Essentials
What information should I save before arriving?
Your tickets, accommodation address, check-in instructions, rental confirmation, and important phone numbers. Download or screenshot anything you’ll need during the journey.
What if I arrive before my accommodation’s check-in time?
Ask about early check-in or luggage storage in advance. Have an easy lunch or exploring plan in case your room isn’t ready.
What if my arrival is delayed?
Update your host, rental company, and driver as soon as possible. A later arrival may require different pickup or check-in arrangements.
Should I carry cash?
We recommend bringing some, including smaller bills. Ask drivers and other providers which payment methods they accept before using their services.
Can I buy groceries after I arrive?
Plan a grocery stop after collecting your vehicle, and ask your host about nearby stores and opening hours. For a late arrival, arrange first-night essentials ahead.
What should I pack for Vieques?
Pack light clothing, swimsuits, sun protection, insect repellent, comfortable footwear, and a reusable water bottle. Keep medications and essential documents accessible during travel.
What should I book before getting here?
Your island connection, accommodation, rental vehicle or transfers, and any must-do tours. Reserve the bio bay early if it’s a priority, and check the tour’s meeting point and return transportation.
What’s your most important arrival advice?
Know how you’re getting from your arrival point to your rental vehicle or accommodation. Leave some breathing room in the journey, keep your first evening simple, and give yourself time to settle in.
