2026-27 Vieques Passenger Ferry Guide
Taking the ferry to Vieques is an affordable way to reach the island, and the crossing is a good start to the trip. It does take some planning, especially if you are coming from San Juan, traveling with luggage, or hoping to catch a particular sailing.
This guide follows the trip in order: tickets, getting to the terminal in Ceiba, boarding, arriving on Vieques and coming back. The most common questions are answered right below.

Tickets and fares
Checking the schedule
Start with the official Puerto Rico Ferry website or the City Experiences app. The app shows schedules, sells and stores tickets, and posts service alerts.
Pay attention to both the direction and the type of sailing. The schedule can include passenger sailings, passenger-and-cargo sailings and cargo-only departures. Schedules change, so check your own date instead of relying on a screenshot or an old travel post.
When tickets become available
Schedules and tickets are often released in blocks roughly one to two months ahead, but the timing varies. Treat that as a planning guide, not a promise.
If you search your dates and nothing appears, they may not have been released yet. Check back before assuming every sailing is sold out. For a wedding or a holiday trip, keep some flexibility while you wait.
How to buy
Buy through the website or the app, or at the terminal ticket window if seats remain. When you buy, check that you have chosen:
- Ceiba to Vieques for your arrival and Vieques to Ceiba for your return
- The right date and departure time
- A ticket for everyone, including children and infants
- Tickets for extra luggage, coolers, beach gear or anything else that needs its own ticket
Buy your outbound and return tickets as soon as both are available. A confirmed return makes it much easier to arrange your ride on Vieques and your transportation from Ceiba.
“Sold out online” does not always mean full
Online inventory can be limited, and tickets may also be sold at the terminal window. Window seats are not guaranteed, so do not build a time-sensitive plan around getting one. On weekends, holidays and busy days, allow extra time and have a backup.
Save your QR codes
Once your tickets arrive, save the confirmation email and take a clear screenshot of each passenger’s quick-response (QR) code. Keep a copy on another traveler’s phone, or print one. A charged phone or a power bank helps on a long travel day.
What it costs
The operator’s published fare table lists these one-way Ceiba to Vieques passenger fares:
| Passenger | One-way fare |
|---|---|
| Adult, ages 13 to 59 | $2.00 |
| Child, ages 4 to 12 | $1.00 |
| Adult, ages 60 to 74 | $1.00 |
| Children ages 0 to 3 | Free |
| Adults ages 75 and older | Free |
That makes the base fare for an adult round trip $4, before any fees or charges for extra items. Free infant and senior tickets are issued at the port ticket window with identification.
Check the price before you book. The operator’s pages disagree about changes to nonresident fares, so rely on the total shown at checkout, or confirm it with the operator. Luggage and equipment can cost extra. See the operator’s rates page.
Getting to Ceiba
Where the ferry leaves from
The ferry leaves from Ceiba, on the eastern side of the main island, and arrives in Isabel Segunda on the north side of Vieques. It does not leave from San Juan, and the former Fajardo departure point is no longer the place to go for this route.

From San Juan
From San Juan International Airport, allow about 1.5 to 2 hours to drive to Ceiba, depending on traffic. That is driving time only. It does not include collecting your bags, parking, buying tickets or waiting at the terminal. Your options:
- Private transportation. A good choice for families, wedding groups and anyone with several bags. Ask for a quote that includes the number of passengers, your luggage and the pickup location.
- Rideshare. It can work for smaller groups. Check vehicle capacity if you have large suitcases.
- A rental car. Drive to Ceiba and leave the car in long-term parking while you are on Vieques.
For the trip back, arrange your ride from Ceiba ahead of time, especially if you have a flight to catch or will be on a late ferry. More in our guide to getting from San Juan to Ceiba.
Allow more time than you think you need
Work backward from the departure time:
- Be at the terminal at least one hour before sailing.
- Add time to park and get your group and luggage to the terminal.
- Add the 1.5 to 2 hour drive from San Juan.
- Add time to collect your bags and meet your driver after landing.
A tight connection can turn an exciting travel day into a stressful one. If your flight lands late, or the ferry you want leaves soon after you land, think about staying a night on the main island or flying to Vieques instead.
Parking in Ceiba
Paid long-term parking is available on the Ceiba side if you leave a vehicle and board on foot. Check the current rate before you go, and leave time to park, unload and reach the terminal. Take valuables, medication and travel documents with you.
At the terminal
The process is straightforward once you know what to look for, but it can be busy when several groups travel together.
- Arrive at least one hour early. The operator asks for one hour before departure, and boarding closes 10 minutes before. Allow more time if you need to park, buy tickets at the window or buy extra luggage tickets.
- Keep your tickets ready. Have QR codes, identification and any item tickets easy to reach. You may wait outside the boarding area until staff begin admitting passengers for your sailing. Listen for announcements and ask an agent if you are unsure which line applies to you.
- Follow boarding instructions. Passengers may be sorted into groups, such as priority travelers, residents and visitors. Arriving first does not always mean boarding first.
- Manage your own bags. The walk from the waiting area to the boat varies by berth and vessel. Plan to carry or wheel your luggage unless you have arranged help, and keep your hands as free as you can, especially with children.
More about the terminal and the boat
Luggage, coolers and beach gear
The published policy includes one small carry-on per passenger at no extra charge. Other items, including coolers, umbrellas, beach chairs, surfboards and bicycles, may need their own tickets. Do not assume your bags or beach gear will go unchecked. Look at the item categories when you buy, and count each direction of travel.
If you arrive with more than you booked, speak to the ticket office before boarding and leave time to buy extra tickets.
- Bring bags your group can comfortably carry or wheel
- Keep medication, documents and valuables with you
- Keep water and snacks easy to reach
- Check the operator’s rules for unusually large items
- Count your luggage and gear on the return trip too
Can I bring a car to Vieques?
Plan to leave your mainland rental car in Ceiba. Do not assume that booking a cargo sailing or finding vehicle space means a rental is allowed on board. Reserve a vehicle on Vieques instead if you want to explore on your own.
The operator’s fares page says vehicles can currently go aboard only if a resident of Vieques or Culebra owns them, and vehicle tickets must be bought at a port ticket counter. If you think yours may qualify, contact the operator before you make plans. Confirm the ownership and residency requirements, the documents, the space and which sailing takes vehicles.
Traveling with children
The ferry can be a highlight for kids, and families have an easier time when everyone can manage their own bags.
- Include every child and infant in your booking plans
- Check the age categories and how free tickets are issued
- Keep snacks, water and essentials within reach
- Leave time for a bathroom stop before boarding
- Plan how you will handle a stroller, luggage and children together
Ask the operator about strollers and any help your family needs before your travel day.
Accessibility and boarding help
Walking distances and boarding arrangements vary by ferry and berth. If anyone in your group has trouble walking, uses a wheelchair or needs help boarding, contact Puerto Rico Ferry before you book to talk about the vessel and the sailing.
Ask what help is available, where to meet staff and how your mobility equipment will be handled. Tell terminal staff when you arrive, not when boarding begins.
Pets and service animals
The operator says pets other than guide or service dogs must travel in a carrier, and the booking process includes a free service-animal ticket. Confirm the current carrier, ticket and boarding rules before you travel.
With a large pet, do not assume the carrier and the space on the vessel will work. Tell the operator your animal’s size and ask about the specific sailing.
Food at the terminals
There is a small cafe and restaurant outside the waiting-area gates in Ceiba. At the Vieques dock you may find food stands and trucks along the street outside the terminal. Hours vary, so bring water and a snack, especially for early or late sailings. If you want to buy something, do it before you enter the boarding area, and listen for your sailing’s announcement.
Arriving on Vieques
The ferry arrives in Isabel Segunda, not Esperanza. Once you step off the boat, you need a plan for reaching your accommodation or picking up your rental vehicle.
Vieques does not have Uber or Lyft, and taxis can be limited. Arrange your pickup before you arrive, especially with a group, several bags or a late arrival. Depending on your plans, that could be:
- A pickup or meeting with your rental car company
- A taxi or private driver booked ahead
- A transfer arranged by your hotel or villa host
- A walk to a nearby place to stay, if your host confirms it is practical
Do not assume beaches, restaurants or accommodations are within walking distance of the dock. If your ferry is delayed, tell your driver, host and rental company as soon as you can.
Coming back to Ceiba
Give the return the same attention as your arrival. Before you leave your accommodation, check:
- Your Vieques to Ceiba departure time
- Each passenger’s ticket and QR code
- Tickets for luggage and extra items
- Your ride to the Vieques terminal
- Your onward ride, or your parked car, in Ceiba
- Enough time for any flight or other connection
Be at the Vieques terminal at least one hour before departure, as you were in Ceiba.
Connecting to a flight home
If your flight home matters, leave a generous buffer between the ferry, the drive to San Juan and airport check-in. Weather, service changes, traffic and delays can all affect the trip. For an early flight or a connection you cannot afford to miss, think about returning to the main island the day before and spending the night near the airport.
Ferry or flight?
The ferry can be a great value, especially if your schedule is flexible and you are comfortable with the drive to Ceiba. Flying costs more, but it may suit you better if you are connecting from another flight, short on time, or want to skip the drive and the terminal wait. For groups, compare the whole trip: ground transportation, parking, baggage charges, the crossing and transportation once you arrive. See our guide to flights to Vieques.
If something goes wrong
Weather delays and cancellations. Weather can delay or cancel a sailing. Check service updates before you leave for the terminal and keep your plans flexible.
A cancelled sailing. Contact the operator about rebooking and any refund. Do not assume you have a seat on the next sailing until it is confirmed.
Changing a ticket. The route page says transfers must be made at least one hour before the scheduled departure and can be made only twice. Check the current terms and the available sailings before relying on a change.
Refunds. The operator’s route page says ordinary ticket sales are final. Ask the operator about the policy if your sailing is cancelled.
Missing the last ferry. You may need to book a flight, if one is available, or stay overnight and take a later sailing. Contact the operator, then update your accommodation and transportation.
The last ferry before an important flight. Leave more flexibility. If missing the flight would cause a real problem, return to the main island the day before.
An evening tour on Vieques. Do not assume the ferry schedule fits a bioluminescent bay tour. Compare the tour’s finish time with the published return sailings. You may need to stay overnight.
