Sun Bay has room to spread out, beautiful views across the bay, and parking close to the sand. Bring a cooler, find some shade, and make yourself comfortable. You may even see Vieques’s free-roaming horses wandering through.
Location and getting there
Area: South coast of Vieques, immediately east of Esperanza
Entrance: Route 997
Google Maps: Find Sun Bay Beach
Enter through the main Sun Bay gate and follow the access road along the beach. Most visitors spend time toward the eastern side, away from the campground facilities.
An entrance fee may be collected, so bring a little cash and check any posted gate hours when you arrive. If you’re continuing to Media Luna or Navío, read their access notes separately—the roads beyond Sun Bay have different conditions.
Parking—and protecting sea turtles
The road runs along the shoreline, allowing you to park near the stretch of beach you’d like to enjoy.
Do not park on the beach side of the road. This area must stay clear to protect sea turtle nesting habitat. Park on the opposite side of the road, away from the beach. Keep your vehicle off the sand and leave any marked nesting areas undisturbed.

Facilities, food, and shade
Sun Bay is a bring-what-you-need beach. Although there are bathrooms and a café, they may be a long way from where you settle in.
Bathrooms: The campground bathrooms are at the far western end of the beach. Most visitors spend time on the eastern side, so getting to these facilities means a drive or a long walk. This is worth planning around, especially with children.
Food and drinks: Arenamar Sun Bay Cafe is the only food service at Sun Bay. Its opening hours vary, so check the café’s website before counting on it. Otherwise, there are no commercial services. Bring plenty of drinking water, snacks, and everything you need for your visit.
Covered picnic shelters: There are none. Bring your own beach setup if you want somewhere comfortable to eat or relax.
Natural shade: Trees and palms provide shade along parts of the shoreline, although the available shade moves throughout the day. Check overhead before settling beneath coconut palms.
Lifeguards: Don’t assume a lifeguard will be on duty. Check when you arrive and plan to supervise your own group.
Is Sun Bay good for swimming?
On calm days, Sun Bay is a lovely swimming beach, with a broad sandy shoreline and plenty of space to enjoy the water. Conditions vary across the bay, so take a look before choosing your spot.
Strong winds, storms, and swell reaching the south coast can bring choppy water, stronger shorebreak, and currents. There isn’t a season when you can assume the water will always be calm.
Watch the waves before getting in, follow posted warnings, and keep children close. If the shorebreak is knocking you off your feet or you feel a current pulling you, skip the swim.

What is Sun Bay like after rain?
The road and parking
A quick tropical shower is different from several days of heavy rain. After a downpour, check the road and parking spots for standing water and soft ground. Avoid waterlogged shoulders and puddles deep enough to hide the road surface.
If you’re continuing beyond Sun Bay, don’t assume the roads to the next beaches will be in the same condition.
The water
Sun Bay isn’t always perfectly clear. Waves and storms can stir up sand, leaving the water looking milky and reducing visibility.
After heavy rain, runoff can also affect coastal water quality. If you see brown water, visible runoff entering the bay, or a posted swimming advisory, save the swim for another day. Clear water alone doesn’t guarantee good water quality.
There’s no reliable promise that the water will clear within a certain number of hours—it depends on the rainfall, wind, and sea conditions.

Can you walk to Sun Bay?
Yes. Sun Bay is one of the more practical beach options for visitors staying in Esperanza.
Allow approximately 20–30 minutes from the central Malecón area to the western end of Sun Bay, depending on your starting point and route. Walking farther along the bay to the eastern side adds time.
Accommodations near the eastern end of Esperanza are generally closest. Check the route from your specific stay, and remember that “walking distance to Sun Bay” may mean the nearest end of the beach rather than the spot where you’ll spend the afternoon.
Bring water and sun protection, and plan your return before dark.
Permits and events
For a regular beach day, you generally don’t need to arrange a permit in advance, although an entrance fee may apply.
Camping requires advance arrangements. For a wedding, organized gathering, or setup involving chairs, an arch, amplified music, or vendors, confirm the current permissions and permit requirements with Sun Bay’s managing office before making plans.
Sun Bay has its own entrance and management arrangements. Don’t assume the rules for beaches inside the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge apply here.
Weddings at Sun Bay
Sun Bay’s sweeping shoreline and palms make a beautiful setting for a beach ceremony. Parking near the sand can also make access easier for guests than at beaches reached by a rough road or long trail.
Keep the practical details in mind: Sun Bay is a public beach, privacy isn’t guaranteed, there are no covered picnic shelters, and the bathrooms may be far from your ceremony location. Confirm permission for your setup and have a weather backup.
What to bring
Pack drinking water, food, sun protection, towels, chairs, and a bag for your rubbish. An umbrella can be useful if the shaded spots are taken.
Come prepared to be comfortable without nearby services, and Sun Bay is an easy place to spend the afternoon.
Sun Bay Beach FAQs
Where is Sun Bay?

How do I find Sun Bay on Google Maps?
Search for Balneario Sun Bay, Vieques, or open the location here.
Is Sun Bay the same as Esperanza Beach?
No. They’re neighboring beaches, but Sun Bay is the large crescent-shaped bay east of Esperanza. Esperanza Beach runs along the town’s waterfront.
Where should I park?
Park on the side of the access road away from the beach, leaving enough room for vehicles to pass.
Can I park on the beach side of the road?
No. The beach side of the road must stay clear to protect sea turtle nesting habitat. Park on the opposite side and keep your vehicle off the sand.
How far is the walk from parking to the beach?
In many spots, it’s just a short walk across to the sand. This makes Sun Bay convenient when you’re carrying chairs, a cooler, or children’s beach gear.
Are there bathrooms at Sun Bay?
Yes. The campground bathrooms are at the far western end of the beach. Most visitors spend time on the eastern side, so reaching them can mean a drive or a long walk.
Are the bathrooms close to where most people swim?
Usually not. If easy bathroom access matters to your group, choose your beach spot with their location in mind.
Are there covered picnic shelters?
No. There are no covered picnic shelters at Sun Bay.
Is there natural shade?
Yes. Trees and palms provide shade along parts of the beach, although it shifts throughout the day. Check overhead before sitting beneath coconut palms.
Is there somewhere to buy food or drinks?
Arenamar Sun Bay Cafe is the only food service at Sun Bay. Its opening hours vary, so check the café’s website before relying on it.
Are there other shops or commercial services?
No. Apart from Arenamar Sun Bay Cafe, there are no commercial services. Bring everything you need for your beach day.
Should I bring my own food and water?
Yes. Bring plenty of drinking water and enough food for your visit, even if you hope to stop at the café.
Is Sun Bay good for swimming?
On calm days, it can be a lovely swimming beach. Check the conditions when you arrive rather than assuming the whole bay will be calm.
Is Sun Bay always calm?
No. Wind, storms, and swell can bring waves, stronger shorebreak, and currents. Conditions can also differ from one end of the beach to the other.
When does Sun Bay get rough?
Strong winds blowing toward shore, nearby storms, and swell reaching the south coast can make it rough. Check the water on the day of your visit—there isn’t a month when calm conditions are guaranteed.
Is Sun Bay good for children?
It can be a great family beach when the water is calm. Parking near the sand is helpful, but parents should plan around the distant bathrooms, limited services, and changing swimming conditions.
Can I count on a lifeguard?
Don’t assume a lifeguard will be on duty. Check when you arrive and supervise children closely.
Why does the water sometimes look cloudy?
Waves and storms can stir up sand, making the water look milky. Sun Bay’s clarity changes with the conditions, so it won’t always look like the photographs.
Can I swim at Sun Bay after heavy rain?
Heavy rain can carry runoff into coastal water. Avoid swimming where you see runoff entering the bay, unusually brown water, or a posted swimming advisory. Clear-looking water alone doesn’t confirm good water quality.
How long does the water take to clear after rain?
There’s no dependable timetable. It depends on how much rain fell and what the wind and waves are doing afterward.
What is the road like after rain?
Check for standing water and soft parking shoulders after heavy rain. Avoid driving through puddles deep enough to hide the road surface, and don’t park on waterlogged ground.
Can I walk to Sun Bay from Esperanza?
Yes. As a rough estimate, allow 20–30 minutes from the central Malecón area to the western end of Sun Bay. Your starting point and route will affect the time, and reaching the eastern side adds a longer walk.
If my accommodation says “walking distance to Sun Bay,” will I be close to everything?
Not necessarily. Sun Bay is a long beach. Ask whether the walking time refers to the entrance, the western end, or the stretch where you plan to spend the day.
Do I need a permit for a regular beach visit?
You generally don’t need to arrange a permit for an ordinary beach day. Check posted entrance information when you arrive.
Can I camp at Sun Bay?
Camping requires advance arrangements. Confirm current availability, permissions, and facility access before planning an overnight stay.
Can I have a wedding or organized event at Sun Bay?
Check with Sun Bay’s managing office before making plans. Confirm permission and any permit requirements for your specific setup, including chairs, arches, amplified music, and vendors.
Would a wedding ceremony be private?
Sun Bay is a public beach, so don’t assume you’ll have a stretch of shoreline to yourselves. Other visitors may be nearby.
Is there shelter if it rains?
There are no covered picnic shelters. Have a plan to return to your vehicle or leave the beach if the weather turns.
Will I see horses at Sun Bay?
You might. Vieques’s free-roaming horses sometimes wander through the area. Give them space, don’t feed them, and keep food packed away.
What should I do if I see a marked turtle nest?
Leave it undisturbed and give it plenty of space. Keep vehicles, chairs, umbrellas, and other beach gear away from the marked area.
What should I bring?
Bring drinking water, food, towels, sun protection, chairs, and a bag for your rubbish. An umbrella is useful if the natural shade is taken, and a cooler makes a longer stay more comfortable.

Water and surf
The eastern side of the bay is generally calm and swimmable and gets rougher the further you move to the west (or right side when looking at the ocean). There is a rocky section in the center that offers simple snorkeling on the calmest days, but can be quite dangerous in semi-rough to rough conditions.
After rain
The roads are typically fine with some deeper puddles. Taking the road beyond Sun-Bay, it can often get very rough.
