The Last Spanish Fort Built in the Americas
We invite you to make
Fortin Conde de Mirasol your first stop when you visit the island, we know you’re in a hurry to get to the beach, but if you want to make a connection with Vieques, you must first get to know it’s past.
Fortin Conde de Mirasol is administered by the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture (ICP).
El
Fortin Conde de Mirasol was built between 1845 and 1855. “El Fortin” (The fort) was previously best place on the island to learn about the island’s history. As of now, the caretaker has sadly passed away and the future of the museum and the fort itself are uncertain.
As you walk around
El Fortin you’ll enjoy some of the best views on the island. From here you can see the colorful architecture of Isabel II contrasted by the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean and lush green flora that covers the island. The scenic views include the main island of Puerto Rico and the sister
island of Culebra.
Entry Fee & Hours
- Hours: The interior and museum portion of the fort is currently closed to visitors, though you are free to (carefully) walk the grounds at no cost.
