Carros Publicos (Taxis) in Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico

Last checked November 2, 2026

Everyone knows a taxi driver. Finding an available one is another story.

Everyone on Vieques somehow knows a taxi driver… and yet there never seems to be one available exactly when you need a ride.

Taxis are useful for getting to dinner, heading out for drinks, or traveling without a rental car. But transportation here takes planning, especially during busy weekends, holidays, and wedding season.

On November 4, 2026 Vieques.com personally texted all 75 random Taxi number we’ve collected over the last 20 years.  On November 6 we followed up.  These are the names and number of the only people who responded confirming that they’re indeed offering Taxi service into 2027.

How to find a taxi

There is no Uber or Lyft on Vieques. Most independent drivers arrange rides directly by phone or text.

Your accommodations will likely have a list of preferred drivers, so ask your hotel, guesthouse, or villa host before arrival. There’s also a list of taxi numbers posted at the ferry ticket window.

Having a list is helpful, but it doesn’t guarantee a ride. It’s common to call or text several drivers without getting an answer. They may be driving, already booked, or unavailable, so don’t wait until you need to leave to start contacting people.

741 Taxi offers a dispatch service, an online booking link, and its own app.

Call 787-741-TAXI (787-741-8294).

These booking options are helpful, but availability is still limited. Submitting a request isn’t the same as having a confirmed ride. Make sure you receive confirmation before building your plans around a pickup.

Booking your ride

What to confirm when booking

Give your driver your pickup date and time, destination, number of passengers, and any luggage requirements. For a villa pickup, send the property name and a map pin along with any useful directions.

Confirm the total fare before your trip, including whether the price is per person or for the entire group. Rates can vary by destination and time of day, and nighttime rides may cost more. Ask about payment options when booking, too.

Arrange your arrival ride ahead of time

If you’ll need transportation from the airport or ferry dock, arrange it before traveling. You may find drivers meeting arrivals, but don’t count on an available vehicle—particularly if you’re arriving late or traveling with a group.

For your departure, book ahead and leave enough time to comfortably make your flight or ferry.

Book the ride home, too

Getting dropped off somewhere doesn’t guarantee you’ll find a ride back. Arrange your return pickup before leaving, especially for a beach, a late dinner, or a night out.

For beach trips, confirm that your driver serves that specific beach and agree on a pickup time and meeting spot. Cell reception can be unreliable in remote areas, so waiting until you’re ready to leave to call a driver may not work.

If your plans change, contact your driver as early as possible.

Planning transportation for a wedding?

Arrange group transportation in advance rather than asking everyone to find a taxi at the end of the night. A wedding’s worth of guests leaving one venue at the same time can quickly exceed the number of available drivers.

Our advice

Save taxi numbers ahead of time. Confirm your fare and reservation. Book the return ride. And leave a little breathing room in your schedule.

We’ve seen visitors spend more on taxis in a single day than they would have spent renting a car. For everyday exploring, rent the car. For an evening out when someone else should do the driving, book the taxi—and the ride home.

Vieques taxi FAQs

Finding and booking a driver

Is there Uber or Lyft on Vieques?

No. Vieques does not have Uber or Lyft. You’ll need to arrange rides through a local taxi driver, público, or taxi dispatch service.

How do I find a taxi on Vieques?

Start with your accommodations. Most hotels, guesthouses, and villa hosts have a list of preferred drivers. There’s also a list of taxi numbers posted at the ferry ticket window.

You can contact 741 Taxi at 787-741-TAXI (787-741-8294) or use its app or online booking options.

Can I call or text a driver directly?

Yes. Many independent drivers arrange rides by phone or text. Include your pickup location, destination, preferred time, and number of passengers so they have the information needed to respond.

Why isn’t anyone answering my calls or texts?

This happens, especially during busy periods. Drivers may be driving, already booked, or unavailable. Having several numbers doesn’t guarantee you’ll find an immediate ride, so start making arrangements well before you need to leave.

Should I book my taxi in advance?

Yes, whenever possible. Advance arrangements are especially important for airport and ferry transfers, early departures, late dinners, holidays, and wedding events.

Does submitting a booking request guarantee my ride?

No. Wait for confirmation from the driver or dispatch service. An unanswered text, submitted form, or pending app request should not be treated as a confirmed reservation.

Is there a taxi app for Vieques?

Yes. 741 Taxi has its own app, and its website offers an online booking option. These are useful ways to request transportation, but they don’t guarantee that a driver will be available when you need one.

Will taxis be waiting when my ferry or flight arrives?

You may find taxis or públicos meeting arrivals, but don’t count on an available ride. Booking ahead is particularly helpful for late arrivals, larger groups, or anyone with a time-sensitive connection.

Can my hotel or villa host arrange a taxi?

They may be able to help or share their preferred driver list. Ask ahead of time, and make sure you know whether they’ve confirmed a reservation or simply passed along your request.

Can I arrange an early-morning or late-night pickup?

Ask well in advance and get explicit confirmation for the time you need. Don’t assume a driver will be available outside typical hours without prior arrangements.

What if my flight or ferry is delayed?

Contact your driver as soon as you know your arrival time has changed. Confirm whether they can accommodate the new time rather than assuming your pickup will automatically move.

Cost and payment

How much does a taxi cost on Vieques?

Fares vary by destination, number of passengers, service, and time of day. Ask for the total price when booking, and confirm whether it covers your entire group or is charged per person.

Are taxis more expensive at night?

They can be. Confirm the price for your planned pickup time, including the return trip if you’ll be heading home later in the evening.

Do taxis accept credit cards?

Payment options vary by driver and booking method. Ask before your ride whether you can pay by card or need cash.

Públicos

What is a público?

A público is a passenger van or car providing local transportation, often shared with other riders. Fares are generally charged per person, and the driver may make several stops along the way.

Is a público a private taxi?

Not necessarily. You may share the vehicle with other passengers. If you want a private ride, request it specifically and confirm the price.

Beaches and nights out

Can a taxi take me to the beach?

Some drivers offer beach trips, but not every driver serves every beach. Tell them exactly where you want to go and confirm both the drop-off and return pickup before leaving.

Can I call for a taxi when I’m ready to leave the beach?

We recommend arranging your pickup beforehand. Cell reception can be unreliable at remote beaches, and an available driver may be difficult to find. Agree on a pickup time and an exact meeting spot.

Should I book a return ride after dinner?

Absolutely. Getting a ride to a restaurant doesn’t mean you’ll easily find one home. Arrange both trips in advance, especially if you’re dining late or staying outside town.

How do I explain where my villa is?

Send the property name, a map pin, and any directions provided by your host. Include details such as the entrance, gate, or meeting point so your driver knows where to find you.

Families, groups and weddings

Can taxis accommodate a family or larger group?

Vehicle capacity varies. Give the driver your full passenger count when booking, including children, and mention luggage. Larger groups may need a van or multiple vehicles.

What if I’m traveling with children who need car seats?

Ask about car seats before confirming your ride. Don’t assume the driver will have the type or number you need; discuss whether you should bring and install your own.

Should wedding guests arrange their own taxis?

For larger events, we recommend arranging group transportation ahead of time. Many guests requesting rides from the same venue at once can quickly overwhelm the available drivers.

Taxi or rental car?

Can I rely on taxis for my entire stay?

You can plan a stay around taxis, but it requires flexibility, advance arrangements, and a transportation budget. Multiple daily rides can add up quickly—we’ve seen visitors spend more in one day than they would have spent on a rental car.

For exploring Vieques at your own pace, we recommend renting a vehicle.

What’s your best advice for using taxis on Vieques?

Save several numbers, book early, confirm the fare, and arrange your ride home. Most importantly, make sure someone has actually confirmed your pickup before you count on it.
