Getting from San Juan to Ceiba Ferry Terminal & Airport

Last checked November 2, 2026

You’ve landed in Puerto Rico, your bags are packed, and Vieques is almost within reach. Now there’s one more part of the journey to plan: getting from San Juan to your ferry or flight connection.

The drive to Ceiba is usually straightforward. The most important things are choosing transportation that fits your group, confirming which terminal or airport you need, and leaving enough time so you aren’t watching the clock the whole way.

Here’s how we help our own visitors plan it.

Quick answers

Ferry passengers go to
The Ceiba Ferry Terminal. It is not the same place as Ceiba Airport.
Drive from San Juan
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. On a clear day it can take about an hour.
When to leave San Juan
About 2.5 to 3 hours before your scheduled sailing
At the terminal
Arrive one hour before departure. Boarding closes 10 minutes before.
Small group
Fewer than four people with manageable luggage: Uber is often our pick
Family or larger group
A private shuttle lets you confirm seats and luggage space before travel day
Rental car
Leave a mainland rental car in paid long-term parking in Ceiba
Flying instead
Check your airport code: SJU, Isla Grande (SIG) or Ceiba Airport

Ferry times and rules come from the operator, Puerto Rico Ferry. They change, so check your travel date.

First, confirm where you’re going

Before you arrange a ride, look at your Vieques reservation. Your destination depends on whether you’re taking the ferry or flying.

Your connection Where you need to go
Ferry to Vieques Ceiba Ferry Terminal
Flight from Ceiba Ceiba Airport
Flight from Isla Grande Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport, airport code SIG
Flight from San Juan International Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, airport code SJU

Ceiba Airport and the Ceiba Ferry Terminal are separate places. Likewise, Isla Grande and San Juan International Airport are separate airports.

Give your driver the exact destination and, when possible, share the location from your reservation. Avoid entering only “Ceiba” or “San Juan airport” into your navigation app.

How long is the drive, and when should you leave?

How long is the drive from San Juan to Ceiba?

We recommend allowing approximately 1.5–2 hours to drive from San Juan to the Ceiba Ferry Terminal.

On a clear day, you may make the trip in about an hour. Traffic, construction, weather, and your starting point can make it longer, though, so we suggest using the full 1.5–2-hour window when planning your connection.

If you arrive early, you’ll have time to organize your bags, check your tickets, and settle in before boarding.

What time should you leave San Juan?

For a ferry connection, plan to leave San Juan approximately 2.5–3 hours before your scheduled departure. This allows:

  • 1.5–2 hours for the drive to Ceiba.
  • One hour at the ferry terminal before departure.

Puerto Rico Ferry asks passengers to arrive one hour early, and boarding closes 10 minutes before the scheduled sailing. Puerto Rico Ferry

Add more time if you need to park a rental car, buy tickets at the window, stop for food, or make another stop along the way.

Coming straight from the airport?

Your plane’s landing time is not the time you’ll leave the airport.

First, you’ll need to get off the plane, collect any checked bags, meet your driver, and get everyone and their luggage into the vehicle. The 2.5–3-hour ferry planning window starts once you’re ready to leave San Juan.

For example, if your flight lands at noon, don’t assume you’ll be on the road at noon. Give the airport arrival process its own time and leave some room for a flight delay.

Your transportation options

The three main ways to get from San Juan to Ceiba are Uber, a private shuttle, or a rental car. The best choice depends on your group, luggage, budget, and whether you’ll also be exploring Puerto Rico’s main island.

Uber: our usual pick for a smaller group

For groups of fewer than four people with a manageable amount of luggage, Uber is often our recommendation.

It can be a convenient way to travel directly from the airport or your San Juan accommodation to Ceiba without keeping a rental car parked during your Vieques stay.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • A vehicle that seats your group may not have enough room for every suitcase.
  • Allow time to find a driver willing and available to make the trip.
  • Review the fare before requesting; pricing and availability vary.
  • Follow the app’s airport pickup instructions and confirm the driver and vehicle before getting in.

If you have several large bags, a stroller, wedding attire, or bulky equipment, compare a larger vehicle with a private transfer.

For the return from Ceiba, arrange transportation in advance. We wouldn’t count on finding an available Uber immediately after stepping off the ferry, especially when you have a flight to catch.

Private shuttle: great for families and groups

A private shuttle is a comfortable choice for families, larger groups, or travelers who prefer to have their driver arranged before landing.

When requesting a quote, provide:

  • Your travel date and pickup location.
  • Your flight number, if you’re arriving by air.
  • The number of passengers.
  • The number and size of your bags.
  • Your ferry or flight departure time.
  • Any child-seat, mobility, or oversized-luggage needs.

Ask whether the quote includes gratuity, what happens if your flight is delayed, and how you’ll contact the driver on arrival.

If you want to stop for lunch or groceries, arrange it when booking and add that time to your schedule. A stop can also affect the price.

Rental car: best if you’re exploring the main island

A rental car can make sense if you’re spending time elsewhere in Puerto Rico before or after your Vieques visit. Drive to Ceiba and leave the vehicle in paid long-term parking on the Ceiba side while you’re on the island.

Allow additional time to park, organize your luggage, and reach the ferry terminal.

Plan to leave your mainland rental car in Ceiba. Arrange a separate rental vehicle, taxi, or pickup for your time on Vieques. Local visitor guidance also advises that mainland rental cars are not permitted on the cargo ferry.

If you’re considering a rental car only for the drive to the ferry, compare the entire cost—rental days, fuel, parking, and any other fees—with an Uber or private transfer.

Don’t assume your rental company has a return location at the ferry terminal. Confirm the exact drop-off address and your onward ride before booking a one-way rental.

Parking at Ceiba

Paid long-term parking is available in Ceiba for passengers leaving their vehicles while visiting Vieques.

Before your trip, check the current rate and parking arrangements. Give yourself time to:

  1. Park and unload.
  2. Organize your luggage and travel documents.
  3. Get everyone and their bags to the terminal.
  4. Complete any ticket-window purchases before boarding.

Take valuables, medication, travel documents, and anything you’ll need on Vieques with you. Long-term parking for this part of the journey is in Ceiba, not on Vieques.

Connecting to an island flight

Going to Ceiba Airport instead?

If your reservation is for a flight from Ceiba, give your driver the Ceiba Airport location shown on your airline confirmation—not the ferry terminal.

Confirm your airline’s check-in deadline and work backward from that time. Your ground-transfer plan should allow for:

  • Airport arrival and baggage collection in San Juan.
  • Meeting your driver or collecting your rental car.
  • The drive to Ceiba Airport.
  • Your airline’s required check-in time.
  • A comfortable buffer for delays.

The ferry’s one-hour arrival instruction applies to ferry passengers. Follow your airline’s instructions for a flight.

If you’re driving a rental car, confirm in advance where you’ll return it and how you’ll get to the Ceiba Airport terminal.

Connecting through Isla Grande Airport (SIG)

Some visitors fly to Vieques from Isla Grande Airport, code SIG, rather than from San Juan International Airport.

If you land at SJU and depart from SIG, you’ll need a ground transfer between the two airports. As a rough planning estimate, allow 20–40 minutes for the drive, depending on traffic, plus time to collect your bags, meet your ride, and check in for your island flight.

Many locals like the Isla Grande connection because it’s a small airport and can offer a straightforward departure experience. Compare the complete cost and timing—including your transfer—before choosing between SIG and SJU.

See our Flights to Vieques guide for more on the airport options, baggage, and small-plane travel.

Connecting from San Juan International Airport (SJU)

If your Vieques flight departs from SJU, you may be able to connect without traveling to another airport.

Check your reservation and ask your airline:

  • Whether your checked bags go through to Vieques.
  • Whether you need to collect and recheck your luggage.
  • Where to check in for the island flight.
  • Whether you’ll need to go through security again.
  • What happens if your arriving flight is delayed.

If your flights are on separate reservations, don’t assume the airlines treat them as one protected connection. Give yourself a comfortable amount of time.

Plan ahead for your group

Traveling with children, groups and extra luggage

The best vehicle for your trip is the one that fits the people and all their belongings.

A family of four may technically fit in one car, but a stroller and several large suitcases can quickly fill the luggage space. The same applies to wedding groups traveling with garment bags, camera equipment, flowers, or other special items.

Tell your transportation provider about:

  • Car seats or booster seats you need.
  • Strollers and mobility equipment.
  • Garment bags or wedding attire.
  • Oversized luggage or equipment.
  • Pets or service animals.
  • Any assistance needed at pickup or drop-off.

Confirm what the provider can supply. Don’t assume a child seat or accessible vehicle will be available without a prior request.

Food, water and stops along the way

You can stop for a meal, snacks, or groceries on the main island, but add the stop to your travel time. The 2.5–3-hour recommendation is for reaching the ferry and arriving at the terminal one hour early; it doesn’t include shopping or a sit-down lunch.

Ask your driver in advance if you’d like to stop. A private shuttle provider can tell you whether it changes the price or pickup time.

There is a small café and restaurant outside the waiting-area gates at the Ceiba ferry terminal. Hours vary, so we still recommend having water and a snack with you.

Planning the return from Vieques

Your return journey needs just as much breathing room as your arrival.

Before leaving Vieques, confirm:

  • Your ferry or flight time.
  • Your ride to the Vieques dock or airport.
  • Where your driver will meet you in Ceiba.
  • How you’ll communicate if the ferry or flight is delayed.
  • Your airline’s required arrival and check-in time in San Juan.

If you’re taking the ferry to Ceiba and then flying from San Juan, allow time to disembark, collect your belongings, meet your ride, and drive back. Work backward from your airline’s required airport arrival time—not just the flight departure time.

For an early or important flight, consider returning to the main island the day before and staying near the airport.

Common mistakes we see visitors make

A little preparation prevents most connection problems. The issues we see most often are:

  • Using the flight’s landing time as the time the drive begins.
  • Planning around a one-hour drive instead of allowing 1.5–2 hours.
  • Sending a driver to Ceiba Airport instead of the ferry terminal, or vice versa.
  • Confusing SJU and Isla Grande.
  • Requesting a vehicle with enough seats but not enough luggage space.
  • Assuming a ride will be waiting in Ceiba without arranging one.
  • Booking a ferry or flight connection with no room for a delay.

Confirm the details the day before, keep your tickets accessible, and give yourself enough time to enjoy the journey.

Frequently asked questions

Planning your route

Where do I go after landing in San Juan?

It depends on your Vieques connection. Ferry passengers travel to the Ceiba Ferry Terminal. If you’re flying, your departure may be from SJU, Isla Grande, or Ceiba Airport. Check the airport code and exact location on your reservation.

Does the Vieques ferry leave from San Juan?

No. The ferry to Vieques leaves from Ceiba on Puerto Rico’s main island.

Is the Ceiba Airport the same place as the ferry terminal?

No. They are separate destinations. Tell your driver whether you’re catching a flight or ferry and share the exact address or map pin.

Can I travel to Ceiba directly from my San Juan hotel?

Yes. You can arrange pickup from your hotel or accommodation without returning to the airport.

Should I book my ferry or island flight before my ride?

Yes. Confirm your departure location and time first, then schedule ground transportation around that reservation.

Timing your connection

How long is the drive from San Juan to the Ceiba Ferry Terminal?

We recommend allowing 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, and where you begin.

Can it take only an hour?

Yes, when conditions are favorable. We still recommend planning for the longer drive so you aren’t rushed if traffic or construction slows you down.

How early should I leave San Juan for the ferry?

Plan to leave approximately 2.5–3 hours before departure. This includes 1.5–2 hours for the drive and arrival at the terminal one hour before sailing. Add time for parking or other stops.

Does that window begin when my flight lands?

No. It begins when you’re ready to leave the airport. Allow separate time to get off the plane, collect bags, and meet your ride.

Can I catch a ferry two hours after landing in San Juan?

We wouldn’t plan that connection. You need time for the airport arrival process, the drive, and early arrival at the ferry terminal.

Is three hours between landing and ferry departure enough?

It can still be tight, particularly with checked bags or a flight delay. The road-and-terminal window alone can take 2.5–3 hours, so choose a later sailing when possible.

How early should I arrive at the ferry terminal?

Puerto Rico Ferry asks passengers to arrive one hour before departure. Boarding closes ten minutes before sailing. Puerto Rico Ferry

What if my flight is delayed?

Contact your driver and check your onward reservation as soon as you know. If you may miss the ferry or island flight, contact the operator about your options. Don’t assume a later departure has space.

Can I stop for lunch or groceries on the way?

Yes, but arrange it with your driver and add the stop to your travel time. It may also change the cost of a private transfer.

Uber and private transportation

Can I take an Uber from San Juan to Ceiba?

Uber can be an option, depending on driver availability and acceptance of the trip. Allow time to secure a vehicle.

What do you recommend for a small group?

For fewer than four travelers with manageable luggage, Uber is often our choice. Make sure the vehicle has room for every passenger and bag.

Will four people and their luggage fit in one standard Uber?

It depends on the vehicle and your bags. Four seats don’t guarantee space for four large suitcases. Compare a larger vehicle or private shuttle if you’re unsure.

What’s a good option for a family or larger group?

A private shuttle lets you confirm passenger capacity, luggage space, child-seat needs, and pickup details before travel day.

How much does a ride to Ceiba cost?

Prices vary with your pickup location, group size, luggage, vehicle, and time of day. Check a current rideshare estimate or request a private-transfer quote.

Should I give my shuttle driver my flight number?

Yes. Ask whether the provider tracks your flight and how delays or waiting time affect the pickup and price.

Can I find an Uber in Ceiba for the return?

Availability can vary. We recommend arranging your return transportation before traveling, especially if you have a flight or another scheduled connection.

Are car seats included in a private shuttle?

Don’t assume they are. Request the right seat in advance and confirm availability and any extra cost.

Can a shuttle accommodate a wheelchair or mobility equipment?

Discuss your specific needs before reserving. Confirm vehicle access, equipment storage, and the assistance available.

Rental cars and parking

Can I drive a mainland rental car onto the ferry?

Plan to leave your mainland rental car in Ceiba. Arrange a separate vehicle or transportation on Vieques.

Where can I leave my rental car?

Paid long-term parking is available on the Ceiba side for travelers boarding the ferry on foot.

Should I rent a car just to get to the ferry?

Compare the full rental, fuel, and parking cost with an Uber or private transfer. A rental car may make more sense if you’re also exploring the main island.

Can I return my rental car at the ferry terminal?

Don’t assume there is a return location at the terminal. Confirm the exact drop-off point with your rental company before booking.

Will I need a rental car on Vieques?

It depends on your itinerary, but we recommend one for visitors who want to explore the island independently. Reserve before you arrive and confirm pickup arrangements.

Can I bring a personally owned vehicle?

Vehicle transport has separate eligibility and cargo requirements. Contact Puerto Rico Ferry directly about ownership, residency, documents, and available space before making plans.

Connecting to an island flight

Do all flights to Vieques leave from SJU?

No. Depending on your reservation, your flight may leave from SJU, Isla Grande Airport, or Ceiba Airport.

Are SJU and Isla Grande the same airport?

No. SJU is Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. Isla Grande is a separate airport, identified by the code SIG.

How long is the drive from SJU to Isla Grande?

Allow approximately 20–40 minutes as a planning estimate, depending on traffic. Add time for baggage collection, meeting your ride, and airline check-in.

How early should I arrive for my Vieques flight?

Follow the check-in instructions from your airline for your specific airport and reservation. Flight and ferry deadlines can differ.

Will my checked bags go straight through to Vieques?

It depends on the airlines and how your tickets were booked. Confirm whether your bags are checked through or whether you need to collect and recheck them.

Can I bring the same luggage on a small plane?

Check the island airline’s baggage rules before booking. Weight, size, fees, and available space may differ from your incoming flight.

Return travel and final checks

How much time should I allow from Ceiba to a San Juan flight?

Work backward from your airline’s required airport arrival time. Add time to leave the ferry, meet your driver, drive approximately 1.5–2 hours, and absorb possible delays.

Should I take the last possible ferry before my flight?

We recommend an earlier sailing when possible. For an early flight or a connection you can’t afford to miss, consider returning to the main island the day before.

What should I confirm the day before traveling?

Check your ferry or flight time, exact departure location, transportation pickup, passenger and luggage counts, and any service updates. Save your tickets and directions where you can find them easily.

What is the most important timing detail?

Your flight landing time is not your departure time from the airport. Give yourself time to get off the plane, collect luggage, and meet your ride before the drive to Ceiba begins.
